People are being encouraged to recycle more this Recycle Week (23 – 29 September)
For its 17th annual Recycle Week, Recycle Now is capitalising on this heightened awareness and asking residents – and people all over the UK – to act and focus on getting recycling right during the week.
The theme of this year’s national week is ‘Recycling. It’s in our own hands’ with an emphasis on making recycling the norm. Recycle week will be asking people to rinse, squash, sort separate in the bathroom, the kitchen, in the office and in the great outdoors.
The council will be posting a recycle tip of the day during the week and is reminding residents that they can always request additional green and blue bags for their plastic and paper recycling. It has also recently relaunched its recycling website to give people even more information about what can be recycled and where it goes once collected.
Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environmental, highways and street services said:
In 2018/19 Dudley residents recycled more than 8,300 tonnes of paper and cardboard. For every tonne of paper and cardboard recycled 17 trees are saved, meaning that in 2018/19 Dudley residents saved over 136,000 trees.
Dudley also recycled over 2500 tonnes of plastic and cans. Recycling rather than making items from new saves both energy, resources and money. Recycling a single plastic bottle conserves energy equivalent to running a 60w light bulb for up to 6 hours. Recycling one drinks can save the equivalent energy required to power a TV for up to 3 hours.
Latest research from Recycle Now reveals that over 60% of UK households are now recycling more than they were a year ago because of environmental concerns. Recycling an item rather than throwing it in the general rubbish bin means that it will be dealt with in the most environmentally friendly way, keeping materials in use and out of the environment.
