Remembrance Sunday services and parades will be taking place across Sandwell on Sunday 10 November.
The Mayor, Councillor Dr Ann Jaron will be attending the service at the Smethwick Council House, while Deputy Mayor Councillor Suzanne Hartwell will be at the service in Oldbury Civic Square.
The Festival of Remembrance service will also be held at West Bromwich Town Hall at 6.30pm on Saturday 9 November. Doors open at 5.45pm. Admission is by ticket only – get free tickets from The People’s Box Office or by calling 0121 569 2616.
Councillor Jaron said: “It’s so important to remember the sacrifices made by people in the two world wars and subsequent conflicts. This year’s services and parades will have added significance as 2019 has marked the 100th anniversary of the 1919 Peace Treaty, the 80th anniversary of the start of the Second World War and the 75th anniversary of D-Day.”
Councillor Steve Melia, chair of the Sandwell Armed Forces and Veterans Parades’ Committee, said: “These parades and services are important as we commemorate wars from the past and show our support for our armed forces today.”
The main Remembrance Sunday (10 November) events for each town are listed below.
Temporary road closures will be in place for the parades.
Oldbury
The service will be at the War Memorial in Oldbury Civic Square.
The parade meets at 10.30am at Low Town car park, with the service starting at around 10.50am.
Rowley Regis
Blackheath Royal British Legion has organised the parade, which will start at 10.25am from Highgate Street car park, Old Hill, and make its way to the cemetery in Powke Lane ready for the service starting at 10.45am.
Smethwick
The parade starts at Smethwick Labour Club, Coopers Lane, at 10.35am, arriving at Smethwick War Memorial outside the Council House, High Street, at 10.45am ready for the service.
Tipton
The parade forms at Tipton Sports and Social Club, Coneygre Road, at 10.15am, leaving at 10.40am to arrive at the War Memorial at Victoria Park for the service.
Wednesbury
The parade forms at Royal British Legion Wednesbury, Church Hill, at 10.15am, leaving at 10.35am and arriving at the War Memorial in the Memorial Gardens in Walsall Street in time for the service which starts just before 11am.
West Bromwich
Dartmouth Park:
The parade meets at New Square (Car Park B – Primark) at 10.30am and starts at 10.40am promptly, proceeding along Reform Street over the A41 carriageway, turning right into Dartmouth Park main entrance to the war memorial for the service at 10.50am.
Great Barr:
The Scouts and Guides will present a remembrance parade at St Margaret’s Church, Chapel Lane. The parade will meet at Junction 7 M6 at 10.15am and start at 10.40am, arriving at the church for 10.50am.
Armistice Day services:
Oldbury Civic Square War Memorial, Monday 11 November. A two-minute silence will be held in conjunction with the Oldbury Royal British Legion at 11am. All welcome from 10.50am onwards.
Heath Lane Cemetery, West Bromwich, will be holding a service at 11am on Monday 11 November. Meet at the Walsall Road entrance at 10.30am.
