Council to install new drainage system at North Walsall Cemetery

Walsall Council is to significantly invest in a new drainage system at its North Walsall Cemetery in Bloxwich, with work anticipated in coming months. The new council plans come on the back of local concerns about recent deterioration at the site. The council cemetery was built on a glacial till in 1996 and the top layer of the land is made up from clay soil. In extreme weather conditions fine clay soil like this can cause drainage issues, so the very heavy rainfall of recent weeks has caused pockets of saturation at the site.

Councillor Garry Perry portfolio holder for cemeteries and crematoria said: “North Walsall Cemetery is a special and reflective place and it is upsetting for everyone to see this water damage caused by the recent bouts of terrible weather.”

“This is a place of rest. We will certainly be taking prompt action to address the immediate drainage issues, but in the longer term I am confident that my recent bid for capital funding to install a new system at the cemetery will prevent waterlogging of this nature ever happening again.”
