Sandwell’s annual autumn Safer 6 campaign took place on (Monday 21 September) with a special online focus this year.
The Safer Sandwell Partnership campaign, now in its 11th year, promoted a wide range of safety, crime prevention and healthy living advice over the next six weeks.
The campaign also supported the ongoing promotion of advice and guidelines around Covid-19, to help protect people from the virus.
Each of the six weeks will have a different theme:
- Week 1 (21-27 September): Health and wellbeing
- Week 2 (28 September-4 October): Exploitation
- Week 3 (5-11 October): Domestic abuse
- Week 4 (12-18 October): Hate crime
- Week 5 (19-25 October): Modern slavery
- Week 6 (26 October-1 November): Crime and anti-social behaviour
As well as online activities, the Safer 6 team will be targeting advice and information to people via posters, leaflets and community networks.
Sandwell Council Deputy Leader Councillor Maria Crompton said: “Our Safer 6 team were adamant that Covid-19 would not stop this year’s campaign, as it’s more important than ever to raise awareness, help everyone stay safe and encourage people to seek support if they need it.
“So although we can’t hold our usual face-to-face public roadshows and events across our six towns, especially given the current high infection rates, Safer 6 is still going ahead with a different approach this year.
“Tackling crime and anti-social behaviour remains a top priority and services are still available to help everyone who needs our support.
“With our partners, we will be sharing lots of information – from advice on healthy lifestyles and crime prevention to knowing how torecognise and report exploitation and incidents of domestic abuse, hate crime and modern slavery happening to you, your loved ones or in your community.
“The campaign will also be supporting our existing work around Covid-19, to help make sure people have the key advice, understand the rules and know how to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.”
The campaign is led by Sandwell Council for the Safer Sandwell Partnership, which brings together the council, Sandwell Police, West Midlands Fire Service and many other partner organisations.
Sandwell Police Commander Chief Superintendent Ian Green, who chairs the Safer Sandwell Partnership, said: “Organisations work closely together day in, day out throughout the year to make Sandwell a safer, cleaner place.
“Safer 6 builds on that by providing extra advice, information and reassurance as the nights draw in – and it’s especially important this autumn with Covid-19 still giving real challenges and worries for people in our community.
“We have seen more crime move online this year, with people of all ages spending longer periods at home and on their devices. So having an online focus for the Safer 6 campaign also responds to this concern, helping to protect people who may be vulnerable to online exploitation.”
