The Mayor of Sandwell, Councillor Doctor Ann Jaron, has made a video to remember members of the armed forces who fell and died in times of war.
The Mayor of Sandwell has also urged residents to remember the fallen this Sunday 8 November from home; by listening to the radio, watching the television or their doorsteps.
Due to the pandemic, the traditional parades and services have been cancelled across the country including those in Sandwell.
The Mayor of Sandwell Councillor Dr Ann Jaron, said: “We are unable to commemorate these tragic losses in ceremonies attended by so many for the last 100 years because we are fighting a new battle, the tiny yet deadly enemy of Covid-19.
“I ask you to observe the two minutes silence together, by your radio, your TV or on your doorstep. I ask you to wear your poppy with pride and maybe even put up pictures of poppies next to the rainbows in your front windows.“
In the poignant video, the Mayor makes reference to not only both world wars but also to the Spanish Influenza pandemic of the early twentieth century.
The mayor added: “This year unfortunately we are unable to remember the Fallen in the same way but that does not mean our respect has waned. It must not.”
“So please do all you can to minimise spread of Covid-19, and take time this Remembrance Sunday to reflect upon those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.”
