Reception children have been planting trees as part of Sandwell Council’s huge tree planting programme.
Children from Jubilee Park Academy and Joseph Turner Primary School helped by Sandwell’s parks team planted trees to mark National Tree Week on Thursday 28 November.
The trees planted will go towards the 5,000 trees Sandwell Council will plant this winter – one for every reception child who started school in September.
The Friends of Jubilee Park were also on-hand to help the children plant trees.
Alan Caddick, Director for Housing and Communities was at the tree planting session. He said: “The children were so enthusiastic about planting these trees and it was great to see everyone working together to plant the trees.
“Jubilee Park is one of the sites where we will have a protected woodland along with Barnford Park in Oldbury.
“These woodlands will be a lasting legacy – as the trees grow, so will the children. The trees will benefit the environment and give children a sense of community and a personal connection to our parks.”
The project is set to last for three years and the council is working with The Woodland Trust who will part-fund the cost of the trees for the first year and ensure the two news woodlands are given protected status.
It is expected the project will cost £90,000 across the three years with a view to extend the project to 2030.
