The Book of Condolence for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Walsall Town Hall closed at 5pm on Tuesday 20 September 2022.
Over 1,200 people including the Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Rose Martin, and the Lord-Lieutenant for the West Midlands, John Crabtree OBE, visited Walsall Town Hall to pay their respects, sign the Book of Condolence and view the floral tributes and read the notes of condolence laid outside the Town Hall.
Since the news about the death of Queen Elizabeth II was announced on Thursday 8 September 2022, the residents of the Borough have been united in their grief and paid their respects during the ten-day period of national mourning.
Like other councils across the country, Walsall Council has played its part in honouring Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and putting in place local arrangements including the opening of a public Book of Condolence, ensuring flags have been lowered and flown at half-mast as a sign of respect, and overseeing the Local Proclamation to the new King, with around 300 residents gathering outside the Town Hall to witness the Local Proclamation for King Charles III.
The Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Rose Martin, thanked the residents of Walsall for the way they came together and paid their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The Mayor of Walsall said, “On Thursday 8 September 2022, the nation was shaken by the news that Queen Elizabeth II had sadly passed away. The day marked the end of an incredible 70-year reign, and I have been truly humbled by the response from our residents.
“I am saddened by the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and I want to thank the people of Walsall for uniting at this time and paying their respects to Her Majesty on behalf of the Borough. I was honoured to read the Local Proclamation for King Charles III and it was fantastic to see so many of our residents come together to welcome the new King.”
Councillor Mike Bird, Leader of Walsall Council, said, “In what has been an incredibly sad time for people around the world, it has been wonderful to see the community really come together to pay their respects and share memories and feelings. We have seen so many residents come through our doors to sign the Book of Condolence and leave tributes for Her Majesty, and I want to thank the people of Walsall for doing the Borough proud.”
After the ten-day period of national mourning, the Council will be removing the floral tributes, keeping the messages for posterity, and turning the flowers into compost, which will be used in a permanent living tribute in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
