The government recently announced a new fund to help with increased home energy costs. This will be in the form of a £150 council tax energy rebate for eligible households, that is, those in Council Tax band A to D inclusive, accounting for around 92% of households in the borough.
Households that are not sure which band they are in can check their council tax band online to see if they are eligible.
Residents that currently pay by direct debit, will get an automatic payment to their bank account. Those households that don’t pay by direct debit and use other methods will be contacted by the council by letter to get bank details – you do not need to contact the council. Paying by Direct Debit is by far the easiest and quickest way to make and receive payments so residents that don’t currently use this method should sign up to Direct Debit by registering for an online account and setting up an instruction on our website: https://go.walsall.gov.uk/ctax. This will ensure that the payment of the energy rebate can be processed quicker.
Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader, Walsall Council said, “The council will support you to access help and advice in tackling high energy bills and improving the heating and insulation of your home. This national government funding offering a council tax rebate of £150 in addition will support many households with managing these costs”
“To help us make this process easier and to get the payment to you quicker, I encourage those of you that do not currently pay their council tax by direct debit to make sure you get these details to us promptly when you are asked for them.”
Tailored information for residents is available on the Simple Energy Advice website and you can find useful updates and information on the council website where residents can find out about other initiatives you may be entitled to access. For example, the council has also secured grants to help owner occupiers with coal fired heating switch to brand new air source heat pumps and/or solar PV for their homes if you have an Energy Performance Certificate of D or below and have a combined household income of under £30,000.
