While residents have been staying at home and keeping safe during the Covid-19 outbreak, Sandwell Council and its environmental partner Serco, have been working hard to collect the increase in general
With more people staying at home there has been a 20 per cent increase in household waste and 38 per cent increase in recycling – figures usually seen only at Christmas time. Residents may have taken the opportunity to have a clear out and an increase in online delivery orders could add to more cardboard for recycling.
Residents are thanked for recycling, however, some blue lid bins are containing wrong items – such as clothing, nappies, food, toys, black bag and polystyrene. You can find what items can or cannot be recycled on our website.

To create space in recycling bins, residents should make sure to crush, squash and flatten items and always put recycling loose into their blue lid bins.
Councillor Maria Crompton, deputy leader for Sandwell Council, said: “Our crews have continued to work hard to empty bins during Covid-19 outbreak and we are happy that all waste services, apart from food waste collections, have now fully resumed.
“Residents should look out for our quarterly newspaper, the Sandwell Herald, arriving this week which has top tips on how to cut down the amount of food wasted and can save a family up to £60 per month.
“A quick reminder to residents that clothing can also be recycled and charity shops will soon start to reopen – but please check with your chosen shop and don’t leave items in doorways. Do not put clothing into your bins at home.
“Again I would like to thank residents for their continued patience during this time and remind you all that we are still adhering to government guidelines on social distancing. So with this in mind, if anyone has any symptoms, please remember to double bag infected tissues, wipes and masks and put in the household waste bin and do not put gloves, masks and tissues in recycling bins.
“Please continue to stay alert and support our crews as the country starts to reopen and get back to normal during this outbreak. Keep Safe.”
