The Court of Appeal handed down a judgment which supports Walsall Council’s approach to dealing with unauthorised encampments. Injunctions forbidding people to set up encampments will apply not only to the people who are on the land when the order is made, but also to any newcomers to the land. This affects over 20 sites across the borough and an appeal is being lodged for an injunction affecting a further twelve sites to be reinstated with some amendments.
Councillor Garry Perry, Deputy Leader for Resilient Communities said:
“This is fantastic news for the borough and I would like to thank officers, particularly in our legal services team, for all the hard work they have put in to get us to this point. I am sure residents who have been affected by anti-social behaviour in the past will feel assured that the council has regained this level of protection.
“We will continue to invest to protect our valued open spaces as well as opening our traveller transit site in the spring for people who choose to come to Walsall. In this way we are supporting and protecting all communities.”
