Gold national award for Tipton Cemetery

The much-praised Tipton Cemetery has won a highly-coveted gold award in a national competition.

The cemetery won gold in the Small / Medium Burial Grounds category of the National Cemetery of the Year Awards 2019.

The awards are an excellent opportunity to reward hard-working staff and demonstrate the central role cemeteries and churchyards can play in the community.

The team at Tipton Cemetery, supported by the rest of Sandwell Council’s bereavement services team, performed exceptionally throughout the extensive judging period, which is focused on industry standards, good practice and freedom of choice.

Tipton Cemetery is also one of Sandwell’s 12 Green Flag green spaces, and is one of only three cemeteries in the West Midlands to achieve this accolade.

Councillor Wasim Ali, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for resources and core services, said: “We are very proud of this accolade because this type of national award recognises Sandwell as leading the way for these types of services.

“The award also recognises and supports our vision for delivering vital and excellent services that matter at key moments in people’s lives.”

Councillor Ali thanked all staff involved and also the Friends of Tipton Cemetery for their support.

The award was made at the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management Learning Convention and Exhibition at the Chesford Grange Hotel, Kenilworth, in Warwickshire.
