A man has been sentenced to more than ten years in jail after raping a woman in Hendon.
Abdullahi Mohammed – 30 (01.01.89) of Watling Avenue, HA8, was jailed at Harrow Crown recently for the following offences:
– rape – ten years and two months’ imprisonment and five years extended licence;
– attempted rape – ten years and two months’ imprisonment – to run concurrently;
– making a threat to kill – four and half years’ imprisonment – to run concurrently;
– possession of a pointed / bladed article – 15 months’ imprisonment – to run concurrently.
Mohammed pleaded guilty of all these offences at an earlier hearing in February.
The court heard that Mohammed carried out the attack at the victim’s address on Thursday, 27 September 2018.
Mohammed was a vague acquaintance of the victim’s family and called her out of the blue asking if he could visit. The woman – aged in her 30s – tried to dissuade him from coming, given that he had not been in contact for a considerable amount of time, by saying she had another visitor imminently arriving at her home, but Mohammed turned up in any case.
Once inside, the woman offered to make Mohammed some tea. While in the kitchen, Mohammed grabbed her from behind and threatened her with a knife. He then forced her into the lounge before raping her. During the incident Mohammed threw the knife he had used in the attack out of a window into the communal area.
After the attack, Mohammed left the address to go and retrieve the knife. The victim raised the alarm with a neighbour who photographed Mohammed retrieving his weapon.
Police were called and Mohammed was subsequently arrested later that day.
Detective Sergeant Andy Cook of the North Area Safeguarding Unit said:
“The judge in the case described Abdullahi Mohammed as ‘predatory’ and ‘dangerous’ and I am glad he will now spend a considerable amount of time in jail.
“I would like to praise the woman for her courage in both reporting this to police and supporting this prosecution. I can only hope that Mohammed’s conviction and sentencing brings her some form of closure.”
